that focuses on chrysler building jeeps in china. now we learned a bit about that from stu varney yesterday. in a moment we will have the truth and the fiction in the fight over this controversial message. as of today for a moment now, though we are going to listen to president obama out making his final argument on the campaign trail. >> we see neighbors helps neighbors cope with tragedy. we see leaders of different political parties working to fix what's broken, not to score political points. we see a spirit that says no matter how bad a storm is, no matter how tough times are, we are going to make it because we are all in this together. [cheers and applause] >> we rise and fall as one nation and as one people. [cheers and applause] >> and that spirit, ohio has guided this country along its improbable journey for more than two centuries, and it's also guided us and carried us through the trials and tribulations of the last four years. in 2008 we were in the middle of two wars and the worst economic crisis since the great depression. today our businesses have created nearly 5 pine 5 millio

sold chrysler to italians that are going to build jeeps in china. a lot of push back from the obama campaign. the ad was dismissed by our last guest. i want to get your thoughts. guest: chrysler has admitted they are going to open a plant in china. they are going to manufacture jeeps in italy they are going to ship to china. why are we not manufacturing them in ohio? i think that is the issue that mitt romney, governor romney, was attempting to promote. the fact of the matter is that we have a substantial loss of automobile manufacturing jobs in ohio between 2008 when the 2011. we have not recovered some of those jobs. some of those jobs, we have recovered. to say that chrysler is not going to be producing jeeps in china is incorrect, because they have admitted that they are going to open a plant in china. they are in the process of doing the right now. >> you think governor romney could have done a better job in how he presented that ad? it has gotten a lot of a pushcart. vice-president biden called it "flagrantly dishonest." he said, >guest: i am not going to get into individual a
. it is not in chrysler. a it is in -- put in the hands of the vulture. now, what have they done besides the congo takedown? i don't know if the romney's are in on it as i would need to see their 2009 taxes. i have asked. the dog ate it. but i was able to do some investigation and i did find that one thing for certain, that they were part and parcel of a move move bond enjoyed because it's illegal, the vulture's activity in the congo and europe and elsewhere. it's not illegal in the united states where the vultures landed in detroit. now folgers fees when things die. so when mr. romney says, let detroit go bankrupt, but it died, what we are doing is creating a feast for the vulture. here is what they did. the u.s. government under obama and under by the way george bush -- it's not obama's bailout even though he pumps his chest and takes the applaud and beatings for it, was created by george w. bush voted in october and december. it was taken over by obama in the meantime. the a bomb administration picking up for bush came up with a deal to save three companies, general motors, chrysler and delphi.
-- the chrysler owners are investing in china to boost the market there. they are not cutting back in ohio. they are investing more in the toledo area chrysler planned. the romney campaign has been asked about it. and they stand by it. the suggestion is clear that ohio might lose jobs. host: let's play a little bit of the radio ad that talks about this. >> barack obama says he saved the auto industry, but for who? ohio or china? gm cut 15,000 american jobs, but they are planning to double the number of cars in china which means 15,000 more jobs for china. chrysler plans to start making jeeps in china. what happened to the promises made to autoworkers in ohio? this same hard-working men and women who were told the auto bailout would help them. mitt romney would welcome the auto industry. mitt romney, he will stand up for the auto industry in ohio. not china. host: so that is a radio ad that we were talking about. this has been on television ads across all media markets as well. guest: what i have seen in northeast ohio, yes, there is a version of that that runs. it has drawn a strong rebuke
of the manner in which general motors and chrysler were forced by the government to cut costs and become competitive. now all these good signs in the economy come with caveats. europe continues to weaken. the fiscal cliff looms ominously. but compared with the rest of the industrialized world and with the arc of other post-bubble recoveries, the united states is ready for a robust revival. this is partly because of the dynamism of the u.s. economy but also because of the timely and intelligent actions of the fed and the obama administration. the next president will reap the rewards of work already done. so it would be the ultimate irony if having strongly criticized every measure that contributed to these positive trends mitt romney ends up presiding over what she would surely call the romney recovery. for more on this, go to cnn/fareed for a link to my "washington post" column. and let's get started. >>> let's get straight to our terrific panel to talk about the economy and obviously a little politics, as well. joe klein is "time's" political economist. amity shlaes is director for the
says. they were overseeing the gm and chrysler bailout. he tells fox news we have lots of conversations about whether to require gm to top off all of the pensions. it was not easy to decide where to draw the line. >> rose and many orther salarie delphi retirees found it was all a political fix that a democratic administration was helping an ally which was organized labor. steve ratner's auto bailout unit said the decision came down to practicality. in order for gm to survive they needed uaw workers on the floor. the workers retained the right to strike no matter what deal was made in gm. they decided to draw the line at topping off the delphi uaw pensions. back to you. >>> steve brown, thank you. 4 minutes until the top of the hour. talk about a proper sendoff for a soccer coach being deployed to afghanistan. >> can you figure out the word of the day? there it is. stick around for the answer. . >> well, it is one minute until the top of the hour. we'll look at the good, bad and ugly . first of the good. a high school soccer coach heading to afghanistan to fight for our country gets a su
companies through bankruptcy. it was obama who took gm and chrysler through bankruptcy. it was mitt romney who did provide for loan guarantees. every fact-checker who looked has said that barack obama was wrong and was not telling the truth. this is what is most important, with the communities depending on autos. the policies that will be good for the auto industry, for the state of ohio. [applause] he wants sensible regulations, for the auto companies and to make sure we can get the auto companies on their feet and make sure trade is fair. he wants worker retraining to work better. that will keep auto jobs in ohio. and strengthen the industry. that is what mitt romney will do. fourths -- we're in the quarter and the score is tied. we're in the red zone. the momentum is on our side. will we be sure we take mitt romney over the goal line in the next eight days? ladies and gentlemen, the next president of the united states, mitt romney. >> thank you. of moving all production to china. i will fight for every good job in america. >> okay. so chrysler corporation then issues this statement. jeep has no intention of shifting production of its jeep models out of north america to china. it's simply reviewing the opportunities to return jeep output to china for the world's largest auto market. a careful and unbiassed reading of the bloomberg take would have saved unnecessary fantasies. so bloomberg had this piece about moving jobs to china. they weren't saying that. they were saying maybe they could expand and do some business in china. >> it's actually a success sorry. >> you have this giant corporation who is uninhibited about referring to what romney is saying about unnecessary fantasies. >> i've got to tell you i'm not polly an na here. but the way that mitt romney has run this campaign, has been disgusting. no regard for the facts. no regard for the truth. willing to say anything just as you were alluding to with john sununu, willing to say anything that serves his purpose at the moment and relying on the fact that he's not going
for the autos, but what obama said was not true. it was barack obama who took gm and chrysler through bankruptcy, ok? >> right? second, it was mitt romney who absolutely did provide for loan guarantees to ensure the warranties were backed up. that is what every fact checker who has looked at what obama said said he was wrong, he was not telling the truth. now, this is what is most important to this guy here and the other uaw workers that are here. it is the policies that mitt romney and paul ryan want to put in place that will make the auto industry strong -- [indiscernbile] he wants sensible regulations. he wants tax reform that will ensure we can get the auto companies back on their feet. he wants to make sure that trade is fair. he wants workers trained to work better for them. he wants their energy costs now. that is what will keep energy -- otter jobs here in ohio. that is what mitt romney is going to. balks, we are in the fourth quarter. the score is tied. we're in the red zone. we got the momentum on our side. are we going to be sure that we take mitt romney over the goal line in the next
political fixes are wrong. he headed the auto task force to oversee the g.m. and chrysler bail-out and he tells fox news we had lots of conversation whether to require g.m. top off all the pensions. it was not easy to decide where to draw the line. >> ratner says the uaw had to be in factories if the g.m. bail-out would work and they drew the line at topping off the delphi uaw pension. bret? >> bret: steve, thank you. latinos are the second fastest growing race group. they will be even bigger and a bigger factor in every election to come. here is chief national correspondent jim angle. >> vice president biden told a radio interviewer from univision that only he and the president recognize the importance of latino voters. >> we have a lot of people who don't pay attention the lay te know vote; particularly, in the other party, realizing that is a political force. >> the president told the des moines register if he wins a second term, it will be because, "the republican nominee and the republican party have sold alienated the fastest growing demographic group in country: the latino communit
invested 100 million new dollars in their plants. chrysler and gm have invested 500 billion in the last year alone. that is huge progress. it is clearly what keeps the middle-class going. >> you have just heard revisionist history from senator brown. he was not elected in 2010, he was elected in 2006 and he has been in washington for two decades. he attacked his opponent on high unemployment rates. since he has been in washington, unemployment rates have gone up and up for the middle-class come up for women come up for african-americans. you have not heard him mention the bailout. middle-class employees. men and women in the 60's and 70's who lost most of their pensions. they were planning on these to live far into old age and he supported a process that stripped them of their pensions. i could not have supported a process that stripped them of their pensions. >> i never said i was elected in 2010. i said i went to work with senator voinovich in 2008 to save this industry. all of this about the workers. i am very concerned about the workers. i have done all kinds of things to protect th
jeeps to the united states. so jeep chrysler came out, fiat, the company, they said, absolutely wrong. general motors, have you ever heard of a company which has got a deal with whoever the next president is, come out and scold the presidential candidate the way there is. everybody we talked to says mitt romney is flat out wrong on this. and, again, we're puzzled that he would do that. he's competitive in ohio. this is a dead heat. statistically a dead heat between romney and obama. very puzzling to hear how this is going over here. >> and just to add to that, the swing voters we're talking to here, there is a sense that this issue resonated. the front pages, the local newspaper here is about romney on the auto industry. >> people are mad. >> and it is registering as an unforced error. people take it very personally here, their jobs, their local economy is connected to the auto bailout and stimulus package according to the mayor here. >> yeah. and, john, listen, the president has a tough sell. it may be an easier sell for mitt romney and the reason i say that is because when everyone
took gm into bankruptcy and sold chrysler to italian who is are going to build jeeps in china. >> of course it turns out it's not true. the company ceo told governor romney himself knock it off. >> reporter: the squabble over that spot has made headlines here in ohio, the obama campaign hit back on air. >> politics at its cynical worst. >> reporter: on a stump the president is casting it as part of a larger message. >> massaging the facts when they're inconvenient to your campaign, that's definitely not change. that's the oldest trick in the book. yeah. that's what governor romney's been doing these last few weeks. and i know what real change looks like because i've fought for it. right along side you. and after all we've been through together, we sure can't give up now. >> report from cnn's jessica yellin. she's with the president in lima, ohio, right now. we'll speak with her later. we have reporters all over the country right now getting ready for tuesday's election. they're in all the key battleground states. much more coming up from all of these reporters. meanwhile, the
off. i just want to see that those bailouts of gm and chrysler benefited nascar because they took all the money the taxpayers gave them and they put it back into nascar because they were still sponsoring it. also, this president does not care about the middle class. we have only had one res on the social security. my mother got a $30 raised, and this is going on for years now. he gets back in we will not get another one. the only reason he gave this one is because of the election. >> host: all right, reid willson. >> guest: with nascar, i will use this opportunity to plug the hot line a little bit if you don't mind. we put up an interesting post last week by two republican named michael shannon and will feltis on the consumer habits and how much they like their sports and which sports the like and how that correlates to the voting data. as you can imagine, nascar is a pretty republican sport but it's interesting to hear that apparently they're getting bailout money. i have not heard that. but check that out. go to hot lineon call.org and see what that says about your politics. >> host
companies gm and chrysler to foreign. nowhere in the ads does it mention romney opposed the auto bailout. gm officials blasted the spot to a detroit newspaper saying no amount of campaign politics at its cynical worst will diminish our record of creating jobs in the u.s. and repate rating properties back to this country. polls receiving high marks for his handling of superstorm sandy, it's unclear how much the race has changed. hoping to recapture the momentum he had before the storm, romney recycled a line of attack he used presandy. >> he's been out talking about how he's going to save big bird and then playing silly word games with my last name, or first. and then attacking me day in and day out. >> reporter: the storm also interrupted romney's closing argument which he was supposed to start delivering last monday. instead, he has five days left to make his case against a president who has emerged from sandy perhaps now tougher to beat. wolf. >> jim acosta on the campaign trail with mitt romney. devastated barely begins to describe what happened to staten island, new york, in the wake of
